Parkinson’s Disease

A progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement.

What is Parkinsons' Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease is a chronic condition which occurs when cellular damage to nerves in the brain cause dopamine levels to drop. The symptoms begin as hand and foot tremors, slowed movement, stiffness and mobility challenges, including speech impediments.

Primary Signs of Parkinson’s Disease

Tremor of the hands, arms, legs, jaw and face.

Bradykinesia or slowness of movement.

Rigidity or stiffness of the limbs and trunk.

loss of balance

Impared Balance

Postural instability or impaired balance and coordination.

Parkinson's Disease Research & Treatment

Parkinson’s Disease is a chronic condition which occurs when cellular damage to nerves in the brain cause dopamine levels to drop. The symptoms begin as hand and foot tremors, slowed movement, stiffness and mobility challenges, including speech impediments.Other emotional and mood changes can occur as the disease progresses. Dopamine is critical, as it is responsible for messaging from the brain to execute bodily functions, including movement, cognitive processing (thinking), speech and emotions. To date, Parkinson’s Disease cannot be cured, but treatments do extend both quality and duration of life, helping to reduce the rate of progression and difficult physical symptoms.

Recent research has discovered that individuals with Parkinson’s Disease may present with lower glutathione (GSH) and antioxidant levels, compared to healthy populations. Laurie K Mischley, ND, MPH, PhD(c), published two research reports that revealed a possible link between Glutathione (GSH) and the successful therapeutic treatment of Parkinson’s Disease. Dr. Mischley received two research grants from the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research to complete the “Phase IIb Study of Intranasal Glutathione in Parkinson’s Disease” and the “Central Nervous System Uptake of Intranasal Glutathione in Parkinson’s Disease” study.

In both published studies, it was determined that GSH was not responsible for generating new dopaminergic (dopamine) neurons, but that increased GSH and cysteine can have a positive impact on dopamine receptors. Rather than increasing dopamine, GSH and cysteine can make existing quantities of dopamine more effective, helping the body to reduce cellular stress from free radicals, improved protein synthesis and cellular detoxification.

Glutathione Benefits for Parkinson’s Patients

What does that mean for an individual who has Parkinson’s Disease? That there is an advantage to dietary and supplementary GSH to slow down the progression of disruptive symptoms. A diet that is rich in antioxidants known to increase levels of GSH (including asparagus, spinach, grapefruit, avocado and squash) and daily supplementation can help improve the quality of life for patients who are diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.

This study provides preliminary evidence supporting the beneficial effects of NAC, one of four glutathione precursors found in Original Glutathione Formula, in the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease.
Recent Study

This recent study found that oral administration of NAC (70mg/kg) in liquid or capsule form resulted in an immediate increase in NAC concentration within the CSF (cerebrospinal fluid).
